Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent Comment: I have been to Egypt, the first time was in 1993, and I made my mind up that I'd like to study Egyptology.
Although in my second year of studying Egyptology, during my first year we touched on the diet that Ancient Egyptians had. Although it wasn't one of the study books I was required to read I decided to purchase it.
This provides you with a lot of information on the variations that their society had according to how wealthy they were. Besides mentioning what they ate this book also covers what they grew, condiments, and the kitchen. I found this book informative, interesting and enjoyable to read.
Whether you are studying Egyptology or just want a little more knowledge then Shire Publications are all great books. Have a look at the rest of my reviews, you'll find number of Shire books mentioned.
It makes an excellent edition to my little Egyptian library, which now stands at nearly 1000 books on this subject. :-)
Customer Rating: Summary: excellent book, for everyone Comment: Knowing more about Ancient Egyptian food allows Egyptologists to learn more about Ancient Egyptian society. In this book, the two staples of Ancient Egyptian life, bread and beer, are studied, along with other important foods of the Ancient Egyptian diet: cereals, meat, fish, fowl, vegetables, fruits and condiments. Cooking methods are discussed; reliefs, painting and funerary remains are but a part of the references used. The kitchen, its tools and utensils are explained as well, based on available archaeological evidence. A small section deals with the importance of food in religious aspects of Ancient Egypt. A well-illustrated and extremely useful reference on a little-known subject; recommended reading for everyone. -- Francesca Jourdan
